yes, you only have to flash the Aero firmware.
You can do so with any Spirit unit and then possibly reflash it back.

Can the GPS unit be used with the Spirit Aero, for return-to-home function and geofencing?

This will transform many peoples flying.
Possible use of geo-fencing will prove important in the near future here in Australia with future CASA and FAA regulations!
