odd RTH behaviour

Flying my Trex 500X yesterday I had to use RTH for real for the first time
The usual scenario of disorientation , thinking the heli was facing me when it wasn't and being small it was fast becoming a distant dot
No problem I thought, I have RTH set ( Which I had checked earlier after the firmware update )
I switched on RTH ( with altitude hold ) and at first the heli did not react , it then plummeted towards the ground at which point I thought I had lost it, then well below the altitude limit set point (4m) it shot up again. It did this repeatedly for over 30 seconds before eventually leveling off and returning to me
Our field slopes down quite a bit from the take off point but according to the geolink log I got to minus 4.9m at one point and it was bouncing between this and around 15m
I thought it might be a signal loss causing failsafe to kick in but my TX would tell me this and there was nothing on the Spirit log
Any ideas what might cause this
Geolink log attached
