Spirit 2 - Trouble connecting via S.Bus2

Hello!
I'm setting up a new Spirit 2 in my Synergy 516. I'm using the FrSky cable. I've modified it according to the directions, by moving the center pin on the long end of the cable to its own connector. I have that pin connected to the (s) pin on the E/P/A channel, and the other connector plugged into the Rud channel on the (s) and (-) pins. The short end of the cable is plugged into the S.Bus2 port on my Futaba R3004SB receiver.
The receiver is linked and servos connected directly to it work fine.
I've been through the setup wizard and the Spirit 2 is set to S.Bus. The Spirit 2 controls the servos without any issue. However, the signal from the receiver is very unstable and completely unusable.
I'm powering both the receiver and the Spirit 2 with a 2S lipo at 7.7 volts. The Spirit 2 is powered on the Aux 1 port and the Receiver is powered on channel 1.
What am I doing wrong?
