Open source telemetry

Does the Spirit produce data at the Ail port when its configured to let say DSM2/X? It'll be nice if "we" non Jeti users can take advantage of real-time information too.

No, it does not.
Unfortunately Spektrum does not allow to use these data without special telemetry module. With it you are limited to few variables like RPM, voltage, temperature.
It is likely that in the future it will be possible.
At the moment only Jeti supports bi-directional transmission so it is possible to send and receive data within one protocol.

I was thinking if you can just make oneway data available on one of the free pins, no matter what rx system we use except of course jeti. It should not interfere with the spectrum rx anyway right?
Maybe a generic protocol that spits out telemetry data we can use out of one of the free pins.
Not necessarily for speKtrum but maybe for a DIY telemetry display
Thanks!

This is possible, but there is unfortunately no way how it can be used practically.
It is not possible to show anything on the transmitter that does not support it.
So what I want to say is, that both sides must cooperate on this possibility.
With Jeti this cooperation was established so both sides were able to interface with each other.
With all other brands it is unwanted feature so manufacturers like Futaba, Spektrum, Graupner, JR are not allowing this. Only between their own devices.
There is possibility that one, next brand will start to cooperate, so it will be not only Jeti.

What about Opentx?
I'm pretty sure it would be quite easy to do. Ardupilot currently supports full telemetry with Opentx.
You could probably even look at the opensource code from Ardupilot and Opentx and just convert it for the spirits operating system.

Unfortunately OpenTX does not support functionality that is required, but they plan to implement it soon (according to their words).
Then it will be possible very well.
