So basically do I still need to use a modified Opto cable with resistors for this?

The opto cable should reduce a possible noise issues and make it more safe as no current will pass to the unit from the ESC.
But the problem is, that the output signal is still quite high - BEC voltage. The Spirit can handle 8V from the sensor so the mod of the opto cable is not necessary. But to make it even more safe, it is recommended.
Here the same thing is applied for VBar:

Opto cable has been modifed as per VBar diagram using two 2K resistors.

However I can not get any RPM data to be displayed in the Spirit software.

Signal wire from the sensor cable is connected to the middle Pitch pin and a plug with the + & - is connected to CH0 on the Spirit Pro.

So basically about half an hour to make the cable up and about 5 hours trying to get it to work.

Any ideas please?

You only get readings shown in the spirit app when the governor is enabled AND the throttle valuenis above 50% (the governor is engaged).

I had a call for a feauture to show the actual reading of the rpm's everytime but until now these is not implemented.

When throttle hold is deactivated I see the requested RPM, no problem but nothing at all in the current RPM tab.
Also nothing displayed on my Jeti DS16 transmitter.

Straight line curve of 70% in the transmitter.
No mention of anything Governor related in the flight log.

Governor is enabled in the software and external governor mode has been enabled in the ESC.

I can't see anything wrong with your current setup. It looks good.

I have something you can try to verify if the signal is changing.
I will send you a PM.

As far as Marc1 tested, the governor is reading the RPM with unmodified Opto cable. So no mod is needed, except for the servo connector.

I'll use a Hobbywing HV100a V3 opto with Spirit governor and a Quasar bec on 7'4v
Should I use the opto cable?

No, Hobbywing is working in a different way, where no opto cables are needed. The output from their RPM lead is 3.3V.
