Updated my AR6610T and everything works. Had to reverse a few channels, re-assign Throttle to Channel 1 and re-assign the bank channel. Not a completely smooth transition but all seems to be working. We are on lockdown here in Illinois (USA) so it will be at least 3 weeks before we can fly.

you've already mentioned that you don't want to mix SRXL2 and legacy stuff, e.g. an AR6610T and one of the old, non-SRXL2 remotes (AKA satellites).
If I understood you correctly, you rather suggest to add a new SRXL2 remote to the AR6610T for the bigger helis. Perfectly valid decision
But there are some advantages in the "mix" case (like the MSH brain supports it):

- The cable between the Spirit and the AR6610T is not the single point of failure.
- Those old remotes are much cheaper (at least second hand) and many of us have them already lying around.
- The new remotes are hard to get at the moment, e.g. the SPM9747 has not yet hit the market.
- AR6610T + SRXL2 remote costs more than just two SRXL2 remotes - set aside the builtin vario of the AR6610T that most of us heli pilots do not need

- Let's say we use two SPM4651Ts which have full range telemetry as opposed to the short range telemetry of the SPM9747 (Spektrum calls that "Fly By Telemetry"):
in case one of those two remotes does not "hear" the transmitter (you can detect that either due to missing the frame or interpret the RSSI value), you can use the other one to send the telemetry data and highly increase the chance of being "heard" by the transmitter.

If you are using old Spektrum satellites, you can just get SPM4649T to make telemetry and integration to work.
The latest SRXL2 satellites are quite prone for brown outs alone while full size SRXL2 receiver have big capacitor to stabilize the voltage for them.
Spektrum never recommended to use even old satellites without receiver. But unfortunately people require this feature and use this widely.
But originally there was nothing like SRXL1 or SRXL2 protocols that made it similar to for example Futaba SBUS where people were connecting receivers just by single cable for long time.
Small JST cables were quite unreliable for receivers anyway.
Technically it is possible to mix this technology but I really can't see any good point for adding even more confusion. If problem is cost, then get SPM4649T. If not then get AR6610T and optionally SPM4651T.
The need for using old satellites will cease in short time. But supporting mix will make the transition only longer and add possible troubles and raise many additional questions.

Anyway, if you use the "Spektrum Programmer" to update it, it will tell you the version of the device as well as those available for update.

While that's perfectly true for the old remotes (since they need good 3.3 Volt stabilization), IMHO that's not true for the newer ones. And I can attach their signal line to different inputs of the Spirit - not just a single one like using a AR6610T + remote attached to the RX. In the latter case, there is only one signal line, hence a single point of failure.
That is true. Could flood the support line[mix solution] ... raise many additional questions.
You're right, in the future the old stuff will become extinct.
And thinking of it again, I agree it is better to strive for simpler solutions instead of making things more complex.
The only thing that remains is the single cable. But that's the same with the serial protocols of all other vendors - correct? I don't know all of them ...
